    Exhaust Photo

After reading about exhaust system dimensions, I'm wondering why the PO put this increaser deal inline. Thoughts?

Sorry about the photo size. The rest is 1 1/2 inch all the way.

      Info?

Vermont, which way is the flow? I have often seen a larger diameter from the engine and then a reduction downstream. This is often done shortly after the water is injected and the exhaust gasses have cooled and become a lesser volume. My boat is set up in this manner as I have a 25' run counting the ups and downs and the 14" from the engine to the transom.
An expansion of the exhaust downstream is a "no-gainer" and may actually cause a "batching" increase which is not a good thing..

The flow is from left to right in the photo. I have a tartan30 so the run is maybe 8 feet at most, when including elbows, up an then back down. It's 1 1/2 OD on each side, then this piece.

Is this the last part of the exhaust run before it exits the transom?

About 2 feet before before the exhaust exits

              Is it made of rubber?

It's hard to say from your photo but it looks like one of those flexible exhaust couplers that you often see hooked onto the thru hull fitting at the transom?

The idea being that the flexible coupling won't cause the fibreglass to crack from vibration and heat.

It's position is typical of exhaust silencers. See optional muffler in the diagram.

                  Vermont,
That thing in your photo is a silencer or muffler. All rubber. Original configuration was rubber hose out of the mixing can, muffler, then rubber hose to the thru hull. Hose to muffler couplings were made using 1 1/4" iron pipe - which rusts out. I'm still using my original '73 muffler.

Vermont, that looks just like the muffler on my Tartan 34. it is between the standpipe and the thru hull. It came from the factory that way.

I think mine even says "muffler" on it.

While we are on this subject. Anyone know where a replacement can be obtained?
I dont know what I will do when it fails. Guess just make it straight thru. I do carry a hose for the job.
