    Identifying Moyer Marine Rebuild

I have just purchased a Moyer Marine rebuilt A4. The owner pulled the motor from a boat he acquired and threw away the boat. It seems that the PO may have passed away, and the person I bought the motor from does not know too much about it.

I am wondering if there is a way to get any info about the motor here? I'm curious what year it may have been rebuilt and purchased, etc. It looks as though there are only 16 hrs on the rebuild. Unfortunately the serial # plate was smudged out, but I have numbers from the block.

    Cheers,

    Chris

Try talking with MMI if they had a record it would probably be based on the serial number. If you can get the PO's name perhaps you could look up anything he posted on this site.

If the number you sent was the one shown in the now deleted picture (295369UF), it's not a serial number. That same number is cast into all of the three engines I own. The faint number above it is the manufacturer's date code which, if I remember from your picture, was sometime in 1978.

In addition to the original owner's name, information that may be helpful tracking the rebuild would be the shipping address and approximate shipping date. The more detail the better.

Yes thanks, I realized that so deleted the pic. I’ve sent the correct serial over.

I have no other real info about the motor unfortunately. It has a Moyer serial plate so I’m pretty certain it’s a proper rebuild.

What sort of information were you hoping to find? Knowing it was a Moyer rebuild you already know it was as good as it could be when it shipped to the previous owner. After that, its history and maintenance would be (I think) of greater importance. Was it fresh water cooled or raw water cooled? Did it receive frequent oil changes and flushes? A single water incursion or excessive exhaust backpressure could portend sticking valves, a single overheat episode could create other issues.

I figured if it was a Moyer rebuild, and I can ID the PO, there's a chance some of the info you're suggesting might be in these forums.

Sure. I've been removing components to clean and paint, but it came as a very complete motor, including fresh water cooling kit and water lift muffler.

Looks good. You have a good shop; why not run the engine right there and record the audio - worth a thousand words.

That engine has 2 coolant pumps, did you get the heat exchanger that goes with it?

Yes it came with the heat exchanger.

Once the temps get a little warmer and I can run a hose I’ll fire it up and post some audio.

                            Thanks

That two stroke 25hp Merc is worth its weight in gold, dude!
So, on my FWC'd motor I totally eliminated the mixing valve between the side plate and t-stat housing and forced all antifreeze up thru the thermostat. I also upsized the side plate opening too when I did my fresh water conversion. Part of the reasoning behind that was my electric circulation pump had a 3/4" output, so I bumped up the nipple size and made the side plate hole a little bigger too.

Also recommend the "Thatch mod" to help with coolant flow.
