Oil pump gasket?

I am putting my oil pump together and remember a gasket between the plate and the crank cap. When I put it together without a gasket and start to tighten the four bolts down the gear gets immediately difficult and quickly impossible to turn by hand. I can't believe that the gear should be that difficult to turn. Yet there is no gasket for sale in the mmi catalogue. What gives. Am I remembering wrong or dose the pump need a gasket.

The pump does need a gasket. The gasket comes in the complete gasket set. I called Ken and he was able to sell me just the oil pump gasket.

The fact that the gears tightened up with no gasket means you have minimal wear in the housing and plate - good news.
