    A4 Engines at Work.

I had a guy call me today and he was thinking of buying a boat with an atomic 4 in it. He was somehow told to call me. He mentioned that there seem to be allot of problems with the engines and of course he looked at the forum here. Had to explain to him that this is the forum that covers the world on this engine and that most guys on here are regular members that know the engines. My advice was very simple.

Check compression, clean the carb, change filters, clean tank. Look at putting in EI and informed him on the coil situation with the added external resistor. Change and keep an eye on the oil and winterize it like I do up here (it's already done). The boat is in the area here and I know she's not a regular on the water...so I really pushed cleaning the fuel system from tank to and including the carb.

He was wondering if it had enough power in weather as he wants to do some coastal cruising. I sent him this link. He has a point...when those guys read what can go wrong they don't realize just how easy it is to avoid most of those issues. I had one tiny momentary electrical issue with a loose connection on the alternator this past summer. That was the first time in 3 years that I had to touch the engine non maintenance related. Water in gas once (it still ran), a chaffed plug wire once (it still ran), condenser went once (after I turned off the engine and didn't restart). Total time engine out of operation since 2007 due to mechanical issue...about an hour. If it wasn't for working on other's boats I never have any experience. LOL

So, I was thinking if we had video of our boats being pushed through the water under engine it might be a good thing for the guys on the fence. In the below link I had to get in under the dodger under the weather and took some video. Not a big deal but you can tell the boat is just moving nicely through the water.

Last year I motored into 30 to 40 knots with my 12000 pound Tartan 34. We did 2.5 knots right into the wind. Seas were big, but who knows how big. It was like someone was trowing buckets of water at us.

That was the heaviest weather I had to motor in. The Atomic Four ran at 2000 rpm with the Indigo prop.

I was always a bit wary of the capabilities to motor in heavy weather. Now I am not worried at all.

Here's a video from a few weeks ago when I was motoring off SFO in San Francisco Bay.

This about 1.5 hours in a 4 hour motor trip.

Great idea, Mo and nice video.

This season, a couple of my friends had issues with their...diesels!

Of course, a wave of panic spread through the harbor, down the sound, as hundreds of sailors pulled their diesels and upgraded to Atomic 4s.
