    Reversing Gear Housing

I have this Reversing Gear Housing another member was good enough to send me for the price of shipping cost. My concern is that the flange where the water pump bolts on is slightly different than my original. Was there an after market maker of this part? I like original, but mine broke a piece off during diss-assembly, Rusted, Broken Head, on the bolt.

The "Boss" area , for lack of better term, is not the exact same size as the water pump flange,, it is actually a lager base area. Same hole location,, just thicker all over. Unlike the original, is the exact shape of the water pump.

My real concern actually is the hole above the water pump area has a bolt that goes into an oil jacket I believe, as it was easy to remove and oil covered. Is this thicker area going to cause me trouble on re- assembly?

Thanks in advance for any info anyone can offer.

That's not an aftermarket piece, it's just a later version.

It looks exactly like mine, which is a 1983.

If your concern is whether the bolt you took out will be long enough to fully engage the threaded hole, just go buy another bolt that's, say, 1/4 inch longer. It's a standard thread size, easily acquired at your local hardware store.

I say give it a try and dry fit it first to see whether there really is any issue.

Great, I was wondering, it didn't have the same part number.

      Thanks for the Info Bill.

Just a suggestion. Before installing the new housing drive out the tapered pins and bring the bolts holding it to the block and pan to nearly full torque, then drive the pins back into their holes, and finalize torque on the bolts. The housings should be interchangeable.

Heed him. It is much easier to get the housing back on without those pins in the way. Plus, they're tapered, so they want to lock in when they get to a certain depth. Better to get the housing in place and mostly, but not necessarily fully, snugged, then tap the pins in.
