Transmission lever too close to exhaust port, Help!

Just spent 5 hours "nearly" removing the old hot section on my Ranger 33. The first bend was so close to the flange that I could not get a socket on the bolts. I finally loosened the top bolt with a wrench and a hammer, but there was no way to swing a wrench on the lower bolt. So I used a Sawzall, 5 "heavy metal" blades, and two battery packs to cut the old section away so I could unbolt the flange. NOT FUN.

So, now I need to make a new hot section. I've discovered the reason the first nipple off of the flange was so short. The transmission lever is only 4 inches away from the exhaust flange when in forward. Anyone know if the lever is adjustable? Any ideas how to solve this problem?

A photo would be helpful. The lever can be placed on the other side of the reversing gear which would, of course, necessitate moving your shift cable as well. You could also shorten the lever. On most boats, there's a lot of lever above the linkage point.

      Stephen-

I have a Ranger 30. Likely a bit different set up than yours but closer than others.
On my boat someone shortened the shift handle by a few inches, or it would be the same situation as you describe.
You can just see the shortened handle in this old pic.

You could also do as Mark suggested and move it to the other side...

I was thinking of just cutting it, but was wondering if there was another option besides moving it to the starboard side.

I don't have a good picture that shows the problem.

If your hot section is not yet wrapped you could add a 90 degree L horizontally coming out of the exhaust flange, taking the hot section toward the center of the block, then up.

            Exhaust Manifold

Can a older manifold be used on a later engine? Thanks...

Yes, the manifolds are interchangeable. If you are using an old manifold of unknown condition you should pressure test it before installation.

That shift lever is designed to be used by hand. Just cut off what you aren't using
