    HELP - water jacket bolts

I need to get a water jacket off over lunch. Does anyone know the socket size you need to do this? I think it is 1/2", but I could be wrong.

The water jacket cap screws are 5/16"-18 which normally call for 1/2" socket.

The hare says "If I just push this wrench a little harder I'll get it off before lunch is over. Right?"

The tortoise says "Soak it in PB Blaster, tap on it, and wait overnight"

Who do you think will win?

It is a trick question, as it is going to shear off no matter how many contortions you go through....

I myself have been hitting mine w PB for a week now. Plan on breaking them off next Tuesday or so..... I usually take a BF screw driver and tap it into the flats on each side of the bolt at an angle hoping to help the stuff in.. It does seem to help good bolts come out easier. Galled or rotten, not so much....

If the engine is running start it up and get it up to operating temp and try to loosen the bolts while the engine is running.

The vibraton + small amount of heat should help.

They are stuck good. This is a friend's boat and the cover plate has a rust hole in it. This will be a longer project than lunch hour

                  joe_db..it always is.

When I was helping a buddy get a Sabre 28 running, it was 3 trips..45 minutes away after work, and neither one of us remembered to bring beer.

I finally gave up, and told him to change the spark plugs and he got it running. That was the "Someone thinks I am a guru" thread.

                  Sounds like this is yours..

use side plate as guide to drill out broken bolt

                        re: roadnsky thread

The only thing I would do different is put the side plate plate back on, tight, and use the side plate as a guide for a center punch to get the punch indent precisely in the center of the broken bolt. Or alternatively, use a 3/16 th drill to put in the center indent, then use a much smaller drill to drill through the broken bolt, progressively using larger drill bits until the broken bolt comes out.

Some say that a left handed drill bit can sometimes turn the bolt out, but I did not have much luck with that approach.

                        Best,

                          Jim,
The left hand drill is a good technique, but you DO have to run the drill in reverse!

My two cents: Try tightening them first...then loosen them.
If that doesn't work then PB blaster and heat.

I just re-tapped my 4 corner water jacket side plate bolts up one size.
One had stripped out, which means the others were to follow soon, so I did the others for good measure. My 4 center holes were converted to the Moyer repair kit some years back and are still holding strong.
