    Impeller shelf life

Replaced both impellers fresh and salt on my MMI pumps yesterday

Both impellers were new old stock, never used, and MMI bought in plastic bags.

I was alarmed when later reviewing the plastic bags dates that I had written
on them that one was from 2014 and the other was from 2004!

So much for my stock rotation

I immediately ordered 2 new ones and will swap them out ASAP

They both were a little stiff but that may be normal

What are the warning signs of deteriorating impellers?

I am not sure, but I found 4 or 5 on my boat that date to the 1980s!

When the new ones arrive, I will compare the appearance and stiffness.

If they appear to be the same, I'll try them out and keep the new as spares.

Hi Art. It's hard to beat the "old stock" impeller rap since no one is obligated to state date of manufacture on the item (unlike tires). I bought an impeller in Annapolis once that failed within weeks. OTOH I've got impellers in my MM501and 502 that are 8 or10 years old. I worry mainly about the salt water side for obvious reasons. I think the best we can do is run the MM pumps with their ease of repair feature and buy (and store) impellers from Moyer Marine. I also carry extra pumps ready to switch.
