It is possible that some of the mess in the well vent jet fell in during the "jostle" - the carb actually slipped out of my hand and struck the planking. But there was no mistaking the quantity of brownish powder that fell out of that carb when I opened it up. Did not see any signs of water in the spark arrestor. Prior to removing the carb I was getting a richer than normal mixture and having trouble adjusting it. I put the adjustable main jet in the new carb at the same setting and got a smoother and leaner result. In retrospect I should have been alerted to the richening mixture. Lesson learned.

Finger test
Hanley, perhaps it is some corosion inside the intake and it dropped into the throat. You could feel around in the intake with a clean finger.
I just find it puzeling that it looks the same inside the bowl and in the throat (outside the bowl). It does indeed look like corosion of some sort and it had to come from somewhere.

Further Testing
Made another test run outside the harbor. Was able to reach 2900 rpm and could have gone higher. It may be necessary to change the pitch on the Dave Neptune prop if this is possible. I hope it is because this is the truest running two blader I've ever used. I would like to max out at 2500 rpm. The good news is that at 2900 rpm could not get her over 185 degrees (bypass closed). Could cruise all day at 2500 rpm/170 degrees.

Pitching
Hanley, your application is one that would lend itself to excellent respone to repitching as the prop spins in deadwood. When a prop is repitched it is only the extremities of the blades that take the twist. In your case with more pitch needed it is the tips that will be tweeked and that is what most of the bite is in your application. That is also why I thought my cut down 14" prop with the "broad" ends would work well for you. Also increasing the pitch will increase the radial rake of the blades increasing bite and easing "washout". If you do get it repitched tell them to leave the shape of the tips alone IE don't round them off to look standar, you need the prop area at the tips because of the deadwood blocking the water flow to the center section of the prop.
When I cut that prop I did it on a lathe the shaped the tips to maintain the area at the tips. I did this after I had it pitched back a bit, I think it was aboout 2"s which is about what you will need to add. The prop was allso balanced by Gary a true guru of all things prop in So. Cal.
Good luck and enjoy some water time!

Imminent Departure
Time to get under way. Hoping to squeak out a day of movement between weather systems. Need to get west to NYC "chop chop". This will be my last posting for a while - gotta pull the plug. Should be leaving Edgartown by nightfall or sooner bound for Wakefield, RI. Hope to meet up with some of the A4 brothers on the way. Hanley

Hanley,
I am 2 blocks from the Hudson in lower Manhattan about 1 mile up the river from the Battery if you are considering Liberty Landing for a stop over point.
Enjoy the ride down the East River!
