    This follows the same reasoning as the water jacket side plate studs.
    As matter of course you should never torque an attachment to an iron casting with a cap screw which strains the threads inside the casting. Always use studs - and always of the same material as the casting.

      The flange is rusty because it is the anode in a galvanic cell. Notice how perfect the ss cap screws appear. Even the 1/8" plug looks good.
