    The galvanic cell issue is minor in fresh water compared to salt water, but still present. The corrosion of the block in your situation is probably too slow to notice from year to year. Doesn't sound like you need to rush to install the spacer for that reason alone. When I ran direct drive I had one and was satisfied with it's performance.
