Ignition wires

I would like to relocate my coil to a bulkhead to lessen the heat and vibration. My current coil wire isn't long enough to do that (I have the standard MMI set). Is there anything special I need to look for in a replacement or can I just go to my local auto parts store and get a longer wire?

Hi Mark,
I moved mine a few years ago. I can`t remember if I even needed a different wire. I know I put new wires on that year but they worked. Take a look at one of my engine pics and you will see the coil up on the bulkhead...never had a problem. I didn`t have a problem prior to putting it up there either...just did it because I`d read a discussion on it and it seemed to make sense.

I have since read that it`s not a good idea to have them hanging upside down but that hasn`t been a problem either.

Here's An Idea

If you can't find a wire exactly the length you need buy one that is longer and cut it to length and use the end terminals from the old wire. This of course won't work if the terminals are manufactured on to the wire you are using now. I would stick with the type of wire you have now - solid or carbon core.

In a prior discussion the warning was given not use a wire of lesser conductivity than the wires for the plugs. Seems to cause early failure of the coil to distributor lead.

I didn't need a longer wire after all. Existing wire was too short to move the coil to the bulkhead but I built a bracket that extends down off the bulkhead and attached the coil to that. Never had to remove any wires and the coil is now off the block. Thanks everybody for your help.
