Been thinking about checking crankshaft straightness and came up with something that might work.
a) With the block inverted, install two main bearing shells. Lay the crankshaft in the bearings, give a bit of oil, and check for free rotation.
b) Rotate crankshaft so rod journal #1 is down...

That bearing failure looks like the kind of fatigue damage you get with a mis-aligned bearing. I'm wondering if there might be a slight bend in the crankshaft? Not sure how to check it with no middle bearing.

It's been a while, but I believe that's correct. Use a drift to drive the fwd end of the pin. A little heat on the casting won't hurt.

The brace bar keeps the band brake from moving fore/aft as you move the reverse lever. The shifter cross shaft goes through the brace bar. I don't think your issue is related to a question about closing or not closing the thru hull. The choice of closing thru hull valves relates more to the consequences. An open thru hull could allow inadvertent flooding of the 'people tank' while a closed thru hull could cause overheating if you forget...
