    No kind of sealant is needed in the hot section. There is enough corrosion that the metal to metal joints seal themselves - rather quickly.

    I like to use a bit of TFP paste* (Google "TFP paste") for rubber hoses, barbs, and sometimes gaskets when water is involved. It makes for a better seal (less clamp pressure) and makes the hose easier to remove.
    * ACE hardware has a house brand that works well.
