    Starter rebuild Mass/Nh

One of my projects for this winter was to remove and have the starter rebuilt.

I removed the starter today and I'm glad I did, the solenoid wire terminal fell off. There was green corrosion that had attacked the wire and it was shot.

I'm glad I found this now.

In any case , I live on the Mass/NH border on the coast, did anyone use a shop
    to rebuild the starter ?

    Thanks

Give New England Rebuilt in Salisbury a call. I've had work done by them before. They're not as cheap as the fellow I used to know who operated out of a shack in Merrimack but I don't know if he is still in business (it was kind of a low-key operation).

        NEW starter

Thought I would mention that there is a source for completely NEW starters on e-bay. They are old stock, but unused:

There are more available: the e-bay item # is: 120691637753 Cost is $159.95 + shipping.

I bought one and it comes with an "approved by US Coast Guard" sticker, so it is safe for marine use. Haven't tried it out yet.

Rebuilding yours might be cheaper (or not) and for sure you will learn more....but this is another option. Keep a spare?

Had my old starter rebuilt by an old man in an old shack in the islands. He cut down the commutator from another starter to fit my housing.
$100 and it hasn't missed a beat since.

I think the key is this... Make sure it's an old man rebuilding it

And don't forget the one-eyed dog out in front of the shop! No, wait, that was for alternators!

It's ok, that works for starters too.
One old go-to guy here in Fairbanks died a few years ago. Us do-it-yourselfers miss him. His shop was a shack about 8'x 10' with drifts of old starters and stuff piled against the outside. His wife was a just disembodied voice that cursed at him from the dark kitchen in the house nearby. There was always some colorful political discussion going whenever I showed up. The Discovery channel would've had some real material there.

                Chat Em Up

If you take the work to a small shop chat with the mechanic. If you act interested and sort of knowledgeable (spelling?) you'll come away with a lot of useful information. That was my experience.

                  Russ,
Sounds like you had a wizard there. I had one around home in Newfoundland where I grew up....he could fix anything...if he didn't have the part he'd make it.

I took it to New England Rebuilt and the 1st thing he says its a starter from a Atomic 4.

He said new bushings, bearings, brushes and Solenoid. I think he said something about a clutch that dries out.

                    He had a dog.

The same thing happened to mine, pretty much. The lug coming out the side of the starter case snapped off. The lug is (was) connected to the field coils.

I found a local greasy cave here in Richmond with a few greasy guys inside. They replaced the field coils for $35.

I had already completely disassembled the starter myself, so I took just the shell with the field coils in it down to the shop. I cleaned everything up and put it all back together once they put in the new field coils.

I think he was more like a sorcerer, he put the smoke back in the starters and stuff I brought to him. A dark art
