    Oil Strainer Removal

    Hi folks

Need to remove the crankshaft main journal caps, but the oil strainer is in the way. Can't fit a socket/breaking bar on the nut.

What's the best way to remove the oil strainer? It seems rather delicate. Don't want to do anything I'll regret.

Thanks in advance. I'm continuously impressed at what a wonderful resource this forum is.

Answer: you just rotate it off (parallel to the head, not the flywheel)

A silly question, but maybe someone will find it useful someday : )

Glad that you were able to figure out that puzzle. For those not familiar with the rear main/oil pump/oil pickup assembly, the filter basket just un-screws from a street-el that is screwd into the side of the main cap. By the way I personally feel that this street-el is the most restrictive point in the oil pump circuit. During my last A4 assembly, I carefully "cleaned up" the inside of that 90 degree fitting to increase potential oil flow a little.
