    Outboard Radiator

Has anyone tried cooling their Atomic 4 by running the water hoses overboard to a coil of water immersed copper tubing. I have looked at adding a closed coolant system to my Atomic 4, but I wonder if it wouldn't be simpler to eliminate the heat exchanger by adding a "radiator" to the system, just like an automobile.

The radiator could be much smaller, being water cooled. I was thinking of locating it off the stern, just under the water line. I might be as simple as a few loops of small diameter copper tubing.

Any thoughts? Or is this idea just nutty?

It seems there was a recent discussion of this topic on the board.

There are boats with this type of cooling. For sailboats you might also consider a heat exchanger incorporated into the keel.

Don't forget that a "radiator" is going to turn you wet exhaust into a dry one unless you continue to pump raw water into the exhaust stream. That will mean heat and noise issues.

    Good luck!
