    no water from exhaust

I was preparing to flush out my system before adding antifreeze. Engine started fine and ran OK but no water was coming out of the exhaust. I can't seem to find anything wrong. I took out the strainer from the filter that is between the raw water intake and the hose to the pump. Even when I fill it up with water, it doesn't go down when the engine is running. It appears that something is blocking the water flow but I don't know where to start.
i also noticed that there is a black sludge spitting out of the exhaust. Suggestions?

I assume you are on the hard. Make sure there are no air leaks or the water pump on your A4 will not prime.

If no air leaks, check your impellor.

If impellor is good, check for blockages. A good place to look is at the exhause exit elbow and the T on the side plate.
