Coil Resistor, internal vs. external ?

What is the difference between an internal vs. external resistor on a coil? (besides the obvious)...

What happens if you run an external resistor coil without a resistor?

What type of external resistor is required?

Using an "externaly rated" coil without a resistor will very quickly burn up the points; I'm talking seconds or minutes here not hours. If however, the system was severly deteriorated or the wire runs were extremely long, the "burn out" may not happen at all. I'm hoping this is not the case.
