She looks fantastic, Bill! I really like the taupe/tan color of the sail cover and the bimini... very, very classy. I know the new boats, with their sugar scoop transoms, radar arches, and climate control sing an alluring song, but for me there is nothing like the looks of the classic lines of a beautiful boat. The Shaw-designed Wanderer is certainly at home in the pantheon of classic designs. She looks great.

I wish you a wonderful trip across on Sunday.

    Regards,
    Tom

As we used to say about the "classic plastic" boats: "Built before they found out how thin they could make them".

Yup, me too. I'm eliminating all the 1980s-era bright blue Sunbrella. Not only was it all very worn and beat-up, I just don't care for the color.

The color I chose is called "Linen Tweed". The color scheme for the boat will be white, black, that taupe color, and red, in various combinations. I got the idea after seeing pics of the interior of an old wooden boat on line. Very simple, but very nice.

I also had matching new dodger made - just haven't put it up yet.

That looks more like a Nathaniel Herreshoff design, rather than the son
(L Francis) or grandson's design (Halsey)?

In the commercial, power boat world here on the southern Chesapeake, all the ole' timers said it was bad ,bad luck to have anyting blue on a boat.
Did that hold over to the sailors??

Evidently not, because that blue sunbrella was all the rage in the 1980s/90s. To my eye, it now looks a bit dated - particularly on my boat, because it really was very old and worn out anyhow. I once grabbed the dodger as I went forward, and my hand went right through the fabric!

I'll Take A Shot At This

Why are a lot of sail and boat covers blue? Because they last the longest. Why do they last so long? Because they are blue. Say What?

The two big enemies of synthetic fabrics are flapping in the breeze and ultraviolet light. Why does something look blue? Because it adsorbs some frequencies of light and throws the blue part of the spectrum back. When light of this wavelength hits our eye we say "that's blue". When the blue fabric throws the blue frequency back it also throws the ultraviolet light back so it doesn't molest the molecular structure of the fabric. Or something like that.

OK, folks, wish me luck. Here's hoping things go more smoothly today. We will be departing in about 45 minutes to pick up my sailing buddy once again and have a try at "Launching: Take 2."

I of course will report back this evening - assuming I don't end up at the bottom of Hill's Bay...

As low as the Bay was today, I am glad Bill has a centerboard! I saw one boat on her side this afternoon here in Annaplois, due to the very low tide.
