    Cooling/venting of engine compartment air

    Hello,

I didn't know quite wher eto post this...

What is the minimum and ideal specs for vents for the engine compartment? I have two passive vents, one intake and one outake, scoops along the cockpit rail, and I have an electric blower. I have been running the blower prior to startup for 5 minutes, but do I need to run it the whole time the engine is running? My scoops feed about 3" diameter hoses, one on either side of the engine compartment.

I just noticed that my engine compartment gets quite toasty when in-use.

One standard I read from David Gerr's "The Nature of Boats" is:

minimum vent area (sq. in.) = hp/3.3
    minimum air flow (cu. ft./minute) = (2.75x hp) - 90

Do you suppose my factory-installed venting system on my Columbia Defender is adequate for my Atomic Four?

    Thanks in advance,

    Brett
