    Water pump not pumping

My new water pump is not pumping water. Question. If I remove the hose from the water pump that goes into the engine and start the engine shouldn’t water be coming out of that if the pump is getting water to it?

Yes, but did you try priming the pump?

I'm about 75/25 on whether a new or newly rebuilt impeller pump will prime itself. IME, most of the time it just works but when it doesn't ... its time to prime.
    Thanks,

If I recall correctly, didn't you just install this a few days ago and it was running well?
      What has changed since then?

Yes. Installed the pump last week fired up the engine for a few minutes and it was working fine. Couple days later started the engine no water coming out the back. Undid the engine side of the pump and nothing.

Pull the intake hose off of the thru-hull and open the valve briefly.

            Water pump problem solved

I was racking my brain on this issue. Couldn’t figure it out. No water coming out of the new water pump. I replaced all the hoses and fittings on fresh water strainer. Had found some gunk so decided to replace it all. Needed it anyway. I had the pump out and had removed the intake fitting. With the intake fitting out you can see slightly in to the pump. I put a screwdriver on the shaft and spun while looking into the pump. The shaft was spinning but the impeller was not. Pulled the impeller out stuck a ratchet extension into the impeller and the rubber part is disconnected from the brass bushing. In other words the rubber will spin separately from the brass bushing. You cannot tell by looking at it. It looks like a new impeller.

I put an old replacement impeller in and she started batching immediately. No priming at all. Anybody heard of a new impeller failing like this. This was a new impeller that came in the new pump. DVD

Was this an MMI pump? If yes, contact Don or Ken promptly.

Yes it was a Moyer pump. I tried to call Ken but it was to late. I’ll call him tomorrow with this information.

dvd, Thanks for following up with the resolution, it is appreciated. Now I have one more item to check the next time my water pump won't pump.
                  Thanks,

I once messed around with a water pump for several days before discovering that my water strainer (immediately after the thru-hull) wasn't sealed properly. It was tight but not damn tight. I cinched it down with a wrench and that solved the problem. I think.

I spoke with Ken today at Moyer Marine. He indicated that my impeller failure is extremely uncommon. He is sending me a new impeller replacement.

                        I'd say VERY rare.
Would you be able to take some pics and post of the faulty impeller?
It would be interesting to see where it failed. 🤔
