    water in crank case

A few weeks ago, I noticed a slight increase in the oil level and it was slightly cloudy. I changed the oil. I operated the Cat 30 for about 45 minutes, but I did not check the level for about 5 days later. The oil level was 3" over full! I immediately drain the 4 liters of water (very clear) and the oil.
The operation was normal; no loss in power; temp OK; no steam in exhaust; spark plugs look normal. I did not check compression.
It is a 1975 with an Obersdorfer water pump (seal easy to inspect?)
    exhaust manifold easy to inspect?
Head gasket was replaced about 4 years ago, but not a vast flow like this.
Comments please! Where do I start?

    Bob,

Before doing anything more serious, I would check the anti-siphon valve at the top of the engine cooling water hose under the galley sink. The fact that you had that much water in the crankcase and the oil still remained clear is strong evidence that the water siphoned into the crankcase after you shut the engine down (and before you restarted it); otherwise, the oil would have been very emulsified.

    Regards,

    Don
