    Fuel Pump and Carb rebuild

    All,

I pulled the carb and fuel pump on Anchovy this weekend. Needless to say, I payed hell trying to get the aft bolt out of the pump. Pulling the separator bowl gave easier access, but the socket still didn't want to slip over the hex head very easily. Any tips to use on reinstall?

Also, although I was tediously careful with my screwdriver selection, I'm afraid I might have buggered up the idle jet while trying to remove it. It's at home right now soaking in PB Blaster waiting for a rematch. If it is too screwed up (pun intended) to remove with a screwdriver, wadda ya think of using an easy out?

    Thanx,

    The pump

Rick, for the rear bolt, go get a Sockit Head Cap Screw and use a Hex Wrench (Allen Screws and such).

Re the jet. be vary careful getting it out with an easy out. If you haven't totally destroyed the driver slot try again. You can replace the jet or even go to the Adjustable-jet if you wish. If you can try the screwdriver again you can apply twist and while twisting smack the top of screw driver with a small hammer which may be enough "shock" to knock it loose.

    Good luck

      Dave,

Good idea with the allen head bolt! I'll do that. The PB Blaster did the trick combined with the light tapping/turning with the screw driver...thanx.

I'll get the carb reassembled and the pump disassembled tonite.

I learned of the allen head cap bolt solution here on the forum, believe me that IS the answer. That is why every little tip is valuable, it can save alot of aggravation.

Fuel pump and carb successfully rebuilt! Will be back on Anchovy next weekend. Also swapped to electronic ignition. Bad news is that, despite two days of vinegar soaking and cleaning, the old holly thermostat doesn't open in the boiling pot. Housing is in good shape...guess i'll order the spacer kit and new style thermostat.

I read in a previous thread that someone was considering replacing the wax element in his thermostat and while trying to get it out he hit some part with a hammer (gently I think) and this freed up the stuck part. You might do a search or maybe someone here can point you to that specific thread, If they remember it. Or, since you plan to buy a new one, try taking yours apart or whack it with a hammer as an experiment. Might work!

I did whack the bottom of the thermostat after you suggested it... a ton of additional crud fell out. The thermostat now opens about 1/32nd of an inch now in the boil pot. I'm soaking it again in vinegar and will try again tomorrow.
