Gasket only or Gasket and "sealer"

I am replacing the both of reversing gear housing and the accessory drive gaskets.. The last time it was done there was some type of sealer used...is it necessary to use sealer? thanks, pck

The accessory drive gasket can be installed without sealant. The reversing gear housing gasket needs sealant on the lower ends where the housing meets the oil pan.

I used sealant (Permatex Aviation #3) on the accessory drive - it's unlikely to come apart again (or frequently) - and it's just about as oil wet as the rear housing.
