    Another Newbie

Yesterday I picked up an A4, said to have been a good runner. It's been sitting for a few years, and I'm looking forward to making sure it's sound, cleaning it up, and installing it in my Morgan 27. It's serial number is 193326, so I gather it's a late model.

It's missing a few bits and pieces (coil, fuel pump, exh flange, flywheel cover), but otherwise seems complete. A Zenith carb came along with it (12-87 stamped on mounting flange?), as well as an alternator.

I did a couple of cold compression tests on it last night, with pressure seeming to build with the subsequent test; 1 - 85lbs, 2 - 110lbs, 3 - 80lbs, 4 - 110lbs. Afterwards I put a few squirts of MM oil in each hole, and turned it over by hand a few more times for good measure.

My plan is to outfit it to run on a test stand (read ground), then if all's good, clean up and install.

Any/all insights appreciated, as I'm totally new to the A4!

It appears this engine was fresh water cooled. You may have a real gem there.

        Hello

Welcome to the forum, can't see a thing clearly. If you can resize 5~600 pixels work well.

Dave, if you right-click on the photos and select "view image" it will resize them for easier viewing. It won't help the focus.

            Better Pics

Again my apologies. I've attached a few more pics that are much smaller.

              Smaller pictures = much better.
did I see a heat exchanger with the A4? If so fresh water cooled as Neil suggested.

One comment: do not use the piece of metal with a hole on it on the top of the head to lift the engine. doing this can cause cracks in the engine head.
Use a bridle for lifting her.

Thanks for the tip on using a sling. I most certainly would have lifted it there, had you not prompted me. Then I read up on it... Makes sense.

                  Welcome from the other newbie,

Great score ! Now's a good time to start spraying PB blaster on the water jacket cover bolts and other accessories to insure you won't be drilling out broken bolts. Looks like a good candidate for some fun upgrades from our sponsor.

Here's what I built for hoisting A4s out of tight engine rooms with ease. I threaded forged eyelets into 14mm spark plug shells. Thread the eyelets into 1 & 4 spark plug holes and a 1/2" black pipe fit right through them. On a difficult refit I fashion a wood bracket with a vee cut in the top fasten it to the engine room bulkhead and another from 2X6 (whatever height you require to place on the cockpit floor) and slide the engine out or in.

67rway, That's a 1974 engine you have there, not in bad shape at all. Where did you read up on not lifting these engines by the lifting eye? I've lifted 5 or 6 of these out of boats and off the ground and move them all the time, I've never cracked a head. It lifts perfectly balanced, I don't see how it would cracked a head. I can't imagine Universal punching a hole it the bracket for no reason if it was not intended to be the lifting point.

                        Carl & Thumb;

This argument has been covered many times in the pages of MMI - for my personal opinion...I think it is a very bad idea to place the lifting stresses on either the bolt(s) holding the lifting eye or the in the case of Thumb's method - on the #1 & #4 spark plug holes.

I'll lift mine with a sling when I have to pull the motor.

Don't want to continue an old argument so I'll batton down my hatch.

Sorry to have stirred up something already...

I'm happy to report that received some needed parts from MMI yesterday, and fired it up on the roll-around dolley in the garage last night.

She'll need some testing/tuning, a bunch more parts, a couple of MMI upgrades, and some much needed clean-up.

Then I'll begin the fun outlined in other thread I started, which is to mount/install it on 16" centers!
