What started out as a simple thermostat gasket replacement to fix a slow weeping leak ended up uncovering both a cracked thermostat housing AND a cracked head. This appears to have been due to improper winterizing in 2008 by the previous owner.
After replacing the housing, and a failed attempt to seal the head crack with JB Weld (just kept finding more crack), I'm resigned to the need to replace the head.
But within a few hours of each other, I've gotten diametrically opposed recommendations from trusted, well-recommended A4 mechanics in my area (Baltimore - Annapolis). One said "Be sure to install the Moyer Marine aftermarket head, as it has improvements". The other said "We only use Universal heads, and will not even install a customer-purchased Moyer Marine head."
So, my question is, what are the significant differences between the OEM Universal head and the MM aftermarket head? (besides cost)
From a look at the MM online store, the OEM head weighs 13.2 lbs, while the MM Head weighs 16 lbs. That's over 20% more. To me, this suggests that the MM Head has thicker walls, and would be more resistant to corrosion.
So, whats the story here? Are there real trade-offs, or is the one mechanic just shining me on?
