    Free valve spring length

Hi; I have the head and valves removed from my A4 looking for the cause of plug fouling on No. 4 cylinder. My manual fails to give the free length of the valve springs. Does anyone have that info? Thanks.

    Dave,

Free length of late model valve springs is approximately 2.23". Early model springs were closer to 2".

      Valve spring length.

      Don,
Thanks for the reply. I'm still a bit unclear about my required valve length. My eng. No. is 177597. My spring lengths are between 2.020" and 2.040". Don, do you consider that acceptable?
      Dave.

        Dave,

The length of your springs is more consistent with earlier models. If they are in good condition otherwise (no evidence of water damage), they should be OK, but be very sure your guides are reamed to .314" as the shorter springs are somewhat more prone to causing sticky valves than the very latest ones (which are almost 1/4" longer).

          Spring length.

          Don,
Thanks for quick response. I'll stay with the old springs. I haven't changed the guides so hopefully I won't get any sticking.
          Thanks again Dave.
