starter works fine, but engine won't catch

I wonder where on the forum I should be looking for problems where the starter works fine but there is no engaging of the engine. I recently did quite a bit of overhaul and put everything back together, but I must be doing something wrong. (Before I took it all apart I had the engine running for a few moments, testing my reversing assembly adjustment... it seemed ok then).
