    Roger Dodger

Pretty good list of P's and C's Bill, thanks. I know you must be chomp'n at the bit to get your boat launched and sailing. I'm looking forward to hearing all about it.

Thanks Dan. Like you I have a good amount of old bimini tubing and such parts that I feel pretty comfortable making my own frame. I'd really like to see a photo of your finished product and to understand more about how you went about coming up with your panel patterns, what corrections you had to make, what you might do differently.

I do have an old all metal heavy duty sewing machine and plan on replacing my old and rotting sail cover and bimini this winter.

    Thanks.

Bold: I put a few pics and notes in an album, "dodger pics", on my profile instead of cluttering things up here. Read the notes on the first pic for general info. Dan S/V Marian Claire

        Thanks!

Thats a very fine looking "homemade" dodger, I hope mine turns out half as nice. Cudo's to you and Linda. Thanks for sharing the photo's and comments.

First boat had no canvas, and we used to swelter in the sun. Second boat (with the A4) had a bimini, but no dodger. Great for shade, kept light rain off. Still had a problem with rain in the companionway at anchor, and heavy weather coming in over the deck while underway. Current boat has both, and as I get older, I appreciate the bit of shelter they provide.

I always fly a yacht ensign - need to buy a new one as the old one got knocked overboard the end of last season. I fly a Jolly Roger, but for a particular reason. The Admiral and I have particular nicknames we use for various purposes. I'm the "Pirate", or more particularly "Pirate 50", so I fly the Jolly Roger. The Admiral is "lovepointmoon" after her favorite moonrise spot on the Chesapeake, though it can be a bit salacious, depending on the context. I'm designing a private flag showing the moonrise over the point, that we will fly together with the Jolly Roger.

Also have a couple of burgees - one for the Chesapeake Corinthians, which we've belonged to for ten years, and one for the Md. Yacht Club, which we just joined because they had the best available slip at the best cost for the new vessel.

So, I guess I'll be flying a lot of colors next season.

I went out one time with my Bluetooth earpiece still in. I wonder how that rates as an etiquette failure these days?

                Story Time

Neil, I was just thinking of how lost I would be if I heard "Coast Guard Long Beach"

Was on Sable Island (I think 2001). A yacht heading across the atlantic from the US went aground and was lost....family made it ashore in the life raft. Well, a gas pipeline was being laid and there were a few trucks on the island from the states....with Texas Plates.

It was bad enough that the skipper hit the " graveyard of the North Atlantic" but you should have heard his wife when she saw the licence plates "Texas" on those trucks. I can't quote what she said but it went for about 1 minute...."you F'n idiot...we are in TEXAS...how the ..... did we end up in Texas...you are a stupid .....; you ..... idiot..

I personally heard it all....being the medic and having to respond....lmao. She was right though...how did he hit that island.

There's a cruise ship captain being asked a very similar question right about now.

I guess he is. I was hoping something serious happened that distracted the bridge watch but it doesn't look that way now.

I just read a story in the paper this morning and heard more on the radio on the drive in to work.

Apparently, the head waiter or someone in a role something like that (maitre'd or whatever) was from that island and the captain decided to give the guy and his family on the island a thrill by swinging the ship very close by - basically akin to an airplane doing a low-level fly-by.

And the Italian papers have published the transcript of the telephone conversation between the local coast guard and the captain - he is evasive and keeps changing his story. First he says he has abandoned ship, then he says he hasn't; then he says there are passengers still aboard, then he says they are all off.

Basically, the captain is looking like a lying, cowardly weasel who was trying to show off and got bit in the arse by his own recklessness and then desperately tried to cover it all up and make it go away.

                              (I'm late to the party)

I'm too lazy to pull my "bumpers" in, or zip up my fly. Hell, sometimes I'm too lazy to hoist the sails. I run it on my great A4!
