Acid Flush a Success!
I recently did an acid treatment and high pressure flush on our late model A4 as outlined in the Moyer manual and had great success! Prior to the flush I had temps running between 160-180 and fluctuating a fair bit b/w these two temp points. Also, a small short amount of steam would come from the exhaust when it reached the high mark. So for peace of mind it was time to investigate....
I started by adding a Moyer by-pass kit. This helped a little but didn't bring the temps or swings to rest. Then after doing the acid wash and high pressure flush the temps dropped to b/w 140-160 w/o fluctuating. I'm finding I have to struggle to get her to 160 under load and pretty wide open throttle.
A large amount of black and brownish goop flushed out in the process - so I'm pretty sure this was hampering the cooling efficiency. (I had also replaced the impeller and added a raw water strainer previously.)
Being my first time w/ the acid flush - it took me a full day to do the whole job (spread over a couple of days). But, there was lots of head scratching and searching for parts and acid (hardware stores seem to keep it stocked).
BTW - I purchased the fittings from a local plumbing supply company (Nebar Hose & Fittings here in Seattle). They were really helpful... but I made 4 trips to get all the right fittings and probably spend as much as the Moyer kit. If I did it again - I'd probably just start w/ Moyer's kit to save the headache. But, I made a good contact for fitting supplies in my hood.
