How do you remove water pump seals?

    Hi Friends,

After a week of trials and tribulations, I finally removed my water pump, using a custom made wrench detailed in a previous post.

Now, out of the frying pan, into the fire...

I was able to pry out the smaller seal (closest to the impeller).

The second seal, which is longer, is much tougher. How do remove it?

It seems like it's metal sided, is that true?

Do I just mangle it with a chisel and hammer?

Is there risk of damaging the housing?

    Please help!

The two seals are exactly the same. When you reinstall new seals, put them in so that the words engraved on each seal face each other. When you reinstall the pump, this will keep the inner (deep) seal sealing out water, and the outer (shallow--actually, flush) seal sealing out oil.

Still Struggling with the Outer Seal

      Hi Friends,

      See attached photo.

I've been using a small sharp screwdriver to bang away at the exposed end of the seal, but it seems like I am just mangling metal, without getting a good "bite".

Regarding the previous advice to use a bent probe to "push" the seal out, I tried that with an allen wrench, and just ended up tearing the inside of the seal, with no overall movement.

      What should I try next?

      Thanks,

        other side?

        Rick,
what does the other side of the pump look like? I seem to recall the seals were closer to the end away from the impeller, but I am at work, and my pump is at home, albeit in a similar disassembled state.

          Ah ****...

          You're right...

I've mangled the end without any seals.

The end closer to the impeller has both seals there. I wish I would have known that...

Maybe I can salvage what I haven't damaged, or just buy a new MMI pump. It has several upgrades which seem to make it worthwhile.

Has anybody else upgraded to the MMI pump?

            Rick-
I do not have the MMI pump but I do have the lower bolt extension and the quick change back plate. They were both worth it

              All I Want For Christmas...

Is a new MMI water pump!

              Please Santa, hurry!

I can't wait for that sealed bearing action, thumb-screw face plate, and no grease cup action!

Even better than a BB gun!

              Merry Christmas all,

                Bite the bullet

                Rick,
Your water pump looks worse then the one I replace with an Oberdorfer M202 pump from Moyer 5 years ago (they did not have the newfangled pump available back then). The inside housing of your water pump looks to be in bad shape from the photos which means that impellers will have a short life in there.
Get the new pump, install it and feel a little sense of security that it will work for some time in the future. You now know more then you wanted to about raw water engine cooling pumps.
Been there, done that. Then wait for the next emergency to arise. These engines are hard to kill and in spite of my attempts to really foul things up it keeps on ticking which is most encouraging. My engine is from 1967.

Yes, about a year and a half ago. It sure is nice not worrying about grease cups and the like. It is a little known fact that Santa has a field office in Pennsylvania, and makes the best presents there...

Here is a seal removal tool to make from an old screw driver. To successfully bend the tip of the screw driver, heat it up with a propane torch until it is red hot.

The lip of the tool can be placed in the seal through the hole for the shaft. They'll often pop right out with the right tool.

That being said, the shaft on my pump eventually wore out and I have replaced it with the new Moyer pump. That pump works great.
