My forward gear works fine, but when I shift to reverse the engine dies when I begin to throttle.
Engine dies in reverse

Your fuel mixture may be a bit lean. The only difference the engine sees between forward and reverse is a bit more drag when engaging reverse. If you have an early model engine, you may have to back out the high-speed mixture adjustment a half turn or so. If you have a late model engine (with fixed main jet) you may have to remove the main jet for cleaning.
There is also a possibility that the idle mixture is set too lean (on either engine). You might turn the idle mixture in about 1/2 turn and see if the engine is less prone to shut down when accelerating in reverse.
