My '84 A4 seems to run well. This winter I had to replace the aftermarket Raw water cooling pump (Jabsco). I have had a persistent belt whine ever since, which I no longer think is a belt tension issue. I suspect that I just have not got the belt alignment perfect yet. so on to my main issue:
However, after a half hour (or sometime less) running, I also seem to get a fairly quiet but high-pitched noise from somewhere on the engine. I can not tell where or what it is, current guesses:
1. belt noise from aforementioned water pump (comes on after belt heats up?)
2. some sort of whistle from the carb?
3. various other scary moving-parts noises, such as the electric fuel pump, the accessory drive, the alternator system, etc.
Anyone had a similar symptom and want to toss out an idea? If I slow to idle, take out of gear for a second, this noise usually goes away, but not always. As I said, the engine still seems to be functioning as normal.
