I like the Optima sealed 12 v battery Blue (D34M) for its convenience, size and weight (43lbs) given its power. I need two, one for starting and one for house. I know I need a new special regulator if I change to this battery type. My question is, Is that battery compatible with the Motorola 35 amp late model alternator? Is there any problem to expect in switching out the regulator? This is for a Tartan 27.
Optima battery compatible with alternator?

I got a Xantex(sp?) from West Marine about 5 years ago for about $100.
It has made a big difference in my battery performance as I am able
to adjust the initial (bulk) charge voltage to 14.4 and can also set
the time the controller puts this voltage out. Then it drops down to
an intermediate voltage (also adjustable) and finally down to a float
voltage.
Before switching to the external regulator I would have to replace
my battery every 2 years (the boat was being cruised all summer).
Now it plus a solar panel keep the battery charged up as it should be.

Optima battery compatible with Mototola 35?
Thanks for the info on the benefit of a new regulator on the old alternator--maybe I will not need new batteries after all. Am still curious about the Optima type battery, though. It is the one that looks like glued plastic sixpack on 'roids. Are they OK with the alternator (plus appropriate regulator)??.--Mary
