Greetings all.
My boat was a bit awkward to pull out of the slip (since *I* laid hands on it at least) and the previous owner notes that the port prop walk was always substantial, however the last two or three times I've needed reverse it has been horribly lacking and when I did get any affect out of it, it was to rotate the boat on centre.
I've read several threads on the board about adjusting reverse nut, and from all I've read this is what I need to do. I've managed to get access to the transmission and I've managed to tighten the reversing nut by two faces (clockwise as if facing the tranny *through* the nut).
Umm.
With my fingers. i.e. there was NO tension on the nut at all.
a) is it *normal* for there to be very little tension on the nut, and or resistance to the tightening?
and also
b) what purpose is served by the holes in the faces of the nut? Should there be a (several) cotter pins inserted here?
Additonal info:
a) binnacle mounted shifter and throttle.
b) A4 was rebuilt about 3 years ago.
c) Newport C&C 28, it is *tight* in the engine compartment. Such that I don't think I've been able to see the adjusting screw for forward in the box.
