    Another lesson learned.

We started the motor today to rond out our spring commissioning. It did not sound good Instead of the smooth purr, it ran but sounded different. It was really "pounding". It also did not run or idle as nicely as last season.

However, literally a few minutes of troubleshooting turned this up:

After removing this section of exhaust hose and starting it with bare pipes, the smooth (albiet slightly louder without the muffler) purr returned. Idled well and seemed to have resolved all problems.

You can see the inner wall of the exhaust hose collapsed. This is the section immediately after the hot section of the pipe. The collapsed area was actually inflated larger when I took it off the motor. It retracted a little when the hose cooled.

Not visible in the picture is some other evidence that this hose got hot. I can only speculate, but we had two issues in the past that might account for this. Once we had trouble getting a prime on the water pump (the intake was blocked). Another time a waterpump rebuild produced enough pressure to blast out several pieces of an old impeller blade (a little present from the previous owner). This may have partially blocked the cooling water for some time, we did have over- and under-heating issues until we cleared all of those pieces out.

Guess we add another thing to our preseason inspection!
