    Red Paint

Anyone know what that red paint is that's used on the inside of the major castings (oil pan, transmission case, block)? I'm amazed at it's oil resistance!

    "Magic Paint"

    Al,
The paint you are referring to is "Glyptol 1201 Red Enamel insulating paint" It was originally used to coat the insides of electric motors but has gained favor as an excellent coating for the insides of internal combustion engines. It' not cheap, at over $30 a quart, but it's the right stuff for that job.

I was thinking exactly the same thing...

...until I googled it and it turns out to be spelled Glyptal, not Glyptol.

Why would that NOT be good external paint?

          "Oops"

          Tenders,
Sorry for the spelling error. This paint, by nature, has a relatively dull finish, so I see no reason other than that for not using it as an external finish.

Shucks, I was kidding. An impressive display of technotrivia, in record time, and we don't take off for spelling around here.

(Speaking of spelling, does anybody remember the late, great mechanic qshicks who used to post here?)
