    thermostat orientation

    Hi all,

I'm installing the aftermarket thermostat kit with spacer....

Can someone please confirm for me that the thermostat goes in
    1) atop the head, beneath the spacer
    2) with the spring-and-slug portion of the thermostat facing up into the new housing

    Thanks,

    Orientation

Figment, not sure about which side of the spacer but I would asume on top. Someone will chime in who has done this. I'm suprised there were no directions in the package.
However the spring side goes into the block to absorb the heat, it is a bi-metal spring.
Personally I have never used a thermostat in my A-4, at least not the past 26 + years.

Spring side faces down into the head, I believe.

From a previous post on this subject, the order is:

        - Gasket
        - Thermostat
        - Spacer, with groove down to locate thermostat
        - Gasket
        - Thermostat housing

Seal bottom side of bottom gasket and both sides of gasket between spacer and housing. When you remove it, make sure to remove spacer with housing. Think of them as one piece.

I JB welded the spacer to the housing. To me, they are one piece. I have 50 plus hours on it with no leaks. That's just me though....

I installed that kit with the spacer for the T-stat several years ago. I'm pretty sure the instructions say to gasket both around the spacer and the T-stat hole on the engine head. The newer, cheaper aftermarket T-stat will only fit one way; with the spring facing down to the engine block and cylinders.
There are the details as to which gasket compound (Permatex) and actual gaskets you use (Moyer has them all).
I found the directions that came with kit pretty useful.

If you bought the kit directly from Moyer, it includes directions that expressly tell you the correct sequence. If your kit somehow came without the directions, call Ken and ask him to e-mail them to you.

I'm not offering my advice as to the proper sequence, because the last time I did that, I did it from memory and mis-remembered and said the wrong thing.

Since I'm not at home right now and don't have the directions right in front of me to make sure I don't say it wrong again, I'm keeping my mouf shut (figuratively).
