1977 atomic 4 runs cold

The temp gauge on my Catalina 27 does not register any heat. I have felt the engine while motoring, and it does seem cold. I am going to replace the thermostat. It was closed, but gunky, when I took it out. Otherwise, the engine runs fine. I plan to replace the sending unit if this does not fix the problem.

Any suggestions?

If the thermostat does not fix the problem, I'd check all electrical connections to the gauge and sending unit before replacing any of those items. After insuring that the gauge has a good connection to 12 volts and to ground, I'd run a cheap external lamp cord connection between the sending unit and the sending terminal on the gauge to be sure that there's no break in that wire.
