Thermostat installation instructions ( with spacer kit and original housing )

    Hey,

I unfortunately lost my instruction set for my thermostat spacer kit I recently ordered and just installed it as I describe below:

Thought I should verify the install procedure. Keep in mind my starting point is with the head removed and new longer studs for this thermostat housing.

    - Head ( plus longer thermostat studs )
    - thermostat gasket
    - new aftermarket thermostat from moyer with "cap" side up
    - metal spacer on top of thermostat with the indented ledge outline fitted over the top of the aftermarket thermostat
    - gasket
    - Original late model thermostat housing

Question #1 - Is it right to have the "cap" side of the thermostat oriented so its on top.

Question #2 - I also realize i could have put the metal spacer on before the thermostat and set the aftermarket thermostat down in the indented edge of that spacer with a gasket on top of that and then the housing.

Hopefully the way I have done it is correct. Otherwise I am out a few paper gaskets.

NOTE: by cap side of thermostat I mean from a side profile it kind of looks like there is a rounded cap and a stem below it.

    Thanks

    From the bottom up:

    1. Head
    2. Paper gasket
    3. Spacer (with indentation facing up)
    4. Thermostat (resting in the indentation in the spacer)
    4. Paper gasket
    5. Thermo housing

If you're finding that the thermostat does not fit under the housing, you're putting it in there upside down.

Don't ask me how I know this.

Which is the way the Moyer instructions say to do it.

          Crap!

I seriously hope you haven't made the change yet.

If you have, I owe you an apology.

          I misremembered.

I just came across the actual printed instructions from Moyer - it does, in fact, say the sequence is:

          - Gasket
          - Thermostat
          - Spacer, with groove down to locate thermostat
          - Gasket
          - Thermostat housing

Man, I feel awful for steering you wrong.

I swear I had remembered installing the thermo on top of the spacer. I know I followed the instructions, so I guess I didn't do it that way.

Crap. Serves me right for relying on my memory.

Next time I'll keep my mouf shut (figuratively speaking).

Hey, where were all the other Afourians to tell me I was full of it? Sheesh.

Bill, even though I just installed mine a couple of months ago I couldn't remember the procedure either! ...and why I hadn't said anything..

I just installed mine a month or so ago, and I could have sworn that was the sequence. Which makes me wonder...

But I also know I had the printed instructions right there and just followed what they said.

                My stupid lousy memory...

                  Gasket
                  Therm
                  Spacer
                  JB weld
                  Therm housing

Ok, not according to instructions but, I see the housing and spacer as one unit. Or, to put it another way, the spacer is an extension of the housing.
Therefore, I JB welded the two together before i put them in place.

oh, and don't forget Permatex Aviation sealer on the head side of the gasket.

                    Bill,

I did in fact switch it around last night. Don't worry about it. You have been more than helpful on a lot of my questions. I did the gaskets in such a way that they do not get destroyed when I lift that thermostat housing up.

I will reverse it again tonight and call it good.

I changed mine out couple months ago. Dont remember the exact sequence but it seems to be working and I would have followed the moyer instructions.

OK - but I still feel like a heel for confidently telling you the wrong thing and making more work for you. I'm sure you've got better things to do that juggle thermostat housing parts.

                        Sorry about that...

Hey, at least now you'll be an expert at dismantling and reassembling the thermostat housing! Always looking for the silver lining.
