Great sailing vid

For those of you out there on the left coast or elsewhere who have never been here, this cool video will give you an idea of what sailing on the Chesapeake is like - and why everyone goes on about it all the time...

I've seen similar videos - they always make me really want to get one of those camera/kite setups. They're actually not that terribly expensive anymore.

Does he have the camera kite tethered to the masthead in the opening shot?

No - you can see the line coming out the back, starboard corner - coming out from under the rear bimini. When he hoists it down, you can see the line and then you can see him hauling it in.

sweet vid. Judging by the wide angle shot and the sound it made when the camera hit the water, I'm going to say that's a gopro. Never thought about putting mine on a kite....I'll have to give it a go.

            Yes, it's a GoPro.

There are commercially-available kite rigs and also web sites that show you how to rig up one yourself.

Lost of kite videos out there on YouTube - including lots of people flying them off the back of their boats while sailing. Very cool!

TBH, the sailing vids I normally watch are too violent for a kite. I normally search stuff like "sailing gale offshore." :-) I will definitely be looking in to building a kite rig though. I've got some sweet scuba footage out of the gopro, including my first rebreather dives, and some FL cavern/cave intro stuff...I'd love to mount it on the bottom of the rudder facing forward while sailing over a reef/etc. Maybe one day, if I ever get to blue water.

Awesome video. Chesapeake Bay - probably the greatest short-distance cruising ground in the world.

                  Another Bay video

Thought I'd share a video we shot leaving out of Solomon's one day a year back or so. It eventually sustained above 30 by the time we got across the bay, Yeowzers what a ride. 1967 27' Bristol. A very solid boat.

If this link doesnt work search you tube for "bristol 27 sailing chesapeake bay"

                  Wow over 800 views..Hmmmm?

Nice. I've been out in wind and waves like that - as far as I'm concerned, that makes the right much more fun and interesting.

Interesting how very similar the deck of that boat looks to mine (1968 Pearson Wanderer 30). The forward hatch looks to be the same translucent fiberglass (I plan on converting it to tinted Lexan), and also the same wooden sea hood.

I can't wait to get my damn boat back in the water. I should go up to the boatyard and do some more work this weekend.

                      ***?!?

                      Uh...OK....nice vid.

Dump the dodger & bimini if you are shooting overhead shots on a nice beautiful day when #1, you don't need the dodger, & #2, you are shooting overhead videos with your GoPro that are blocked by the bimini when the camera is overhead on a kite. Plus, the angle of the dodger windows are very steep..whoever designed that thing needs help.

Put the damn fender away..flipping them over the lifeline is bad enough in the bow pulpit scene, but then in the water level shot, he's "baylining"...

The "pirate burgee" is not all the way up..take 5 seconds to untwist the damn flag halyard...and for sure in the USA, you'd better pull out your damn yacht ensign and have it flying, but instead it has a nice Sunbrella cover over it because he is too lazy to store it properly below when he doesn't want it flying & can't properly fly it when sailing.

nice video, but a clueless sailor...guys like this yahoo make us look bad.

edit - now, BR has some nice video! I recognize bell G #1PR off the stbd bow!

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?

Seriously, ***. I hope nobody is out there judging me so harshly when I'm just out goofing around for a good time on the Bay, because when I'm out sailing, the only people I care about satisfying are me and my passengers.

I hope you're never watching at my dock when I pull into my slip, because you'd probably have to spend the next 10 minutes reviewing the list of all the things I did "wrong."
