Service & maintenance shedule?

Hi all,

I am new to the A4 and was wondering if anyone had any tips for putting together a succesful maintenance and service routine. My A4 is a great little motor, and I'd like to keep it that way!

My advice

Others may differ with my opinion:

1) Change oil (30W) every 50 hours. Add Marvel Mistery Oil (MMO) to the oil change.

2) Make sure your fuel supply is clean with good primary and secondary filters to prevent any gunk or particles from reaching your carb jets. Add a bit of MMO to the gas to keep the valves happy.

3) On electrical, get the electronical points, new plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, etc. Big points (!) there.

Please others add to this list, but these are my main things.

If you haven't got it already, the Moyer manual is the place to start. Read it, then read it again. I'm still picking up things as I delve into places I haven't been before.

Other basically original A4 manuals are available, but the Moyer manual includes a lot of valuable anecdotal content based on 40 years of service life - good stuff.

Welcome aboard.

As for electrical items in the ignition as discussed in post previous to yours. Typically they are not expensive and when I had points and condenser on my engine they were replaced about every 2 years. Spark plugs are pretty much a yearly thing. Wires can last a while as can coils...should have spares aboard for those. All spares on the boat should be new...especially coils. If your engine has electronic ignition there is one specific update to coils and resistor for that...fairly new development over the past year or so....but it seems to eliminate recurrent coil failures on the electronic ignition set up.

As suggested, the MMI manual would be a major asset to you as well as reading this forum every couple of days. If it all sound like gibberish look at it like learning a new vocabulary and believe it or not you will learn and come to understand what is going on...that is the first step...a few tools and some guidance and you can fix most engine issues.
