rusting spark plugs

Has anyone had a problem with the spark plugs rusting on their A4. I have a Catalina 27 with an A4, and recently had a spark plug fly apart. It appears that the spark plug rusted through until it was too weak to hold the pressure of the cylinder.

I would like to know if this is a common problem, and if so what can be done to solve it.

I also have a catalina 27 that I sail in the Great Lakes.

We replace our plugs annually, but have never noticed any significant corrosion on them.

Is it possible that salt water is getting to your plugs?
