Replacement alternator for external regulator

I would like to replace my late model Motorola alternator (35 amps) with a higher output alternator that would work with an external regulator. Has anyone made this switch and , if so, would you please let me know which alternator and which regulator you used? Thanks very much

Not exactly an answer to your question: at the moment I am using
the 55A "Mando" alternator Don sells and it puts out 14.4-14.6
volts all the time, so I am not using my external regulator but am
paying a bit more attention to the water level in the battery.
