Whining sound

I recently had my a4 rebuilt and she runs great and has for a few weeks.
But as of recently I'm hearing a slight whining sound when in forward and it goes away when I increase throttle above idle range or take it out of forward drive.
I am also now noticing that reverse is hard to engage without extra pressure on shifter and rpms being applied, definately not as easy to engage prior to rebuid or imediately after.

I've been told I might need to adjust the reversing gear which I see discussed a lot in this forum. I'm curious if the whining sound confirms the reversing adjustment needs attention or might be unrelated.
All other apects of motor are new and working very good.

An assessory drive that has bearings that are wearing out can cause a whining sound. I'm not sure about the reversing gear and that type of noise. However, if your assessory drive was going bad, you would hear this sound in neutral as well as in gear to that is probably not your issue. Just my guess.

My forward has a slight whine to it down near idle rpm too.
I don't consider it an issue. Both my forward "detent" and reverse are right on spec with a fair neutral zone.
I believe I remember reading on an old thread months ago that a soft whine is normal, but could be wrong.
Do you have good "detent" in forward?
And how good of a NEUTRAL zone do you have before reverse?

I do have a good detent in forward and neutral is good, but reverse for the first time since I purchased the boat in 2002 is not engaging easily.
I will use stethiscope type device to zero in on where the whing is coming from. The reverse will definately need some servicing or adjustment which I plan to do myself.

I have a slight whine in forward when approaching the mooring at the end of the day only at idle speed in forward, not in neutral, and never leaving the mooring at the start of the day. I ignore it.

My detente is not as good as I would like; the engine sometimes pops out of forward into neutral unexpectedly, or if I give it sudden accelleration. I'll rotate the collar one notch after launching and see how that does. Maybe that will change the whine. I doubt it, somehow. It should, however, give me a better detente.

What is the origin of the word "detente" in this application?

It is from the instructions for adjusting the Reversing Gear.
Here is a quote...

"Place the cockpit lever in and out of the forward detent several times to insure a proper "feel".
A solid detent should be felt while going in and out of forward,
but the adjustment should not be so tight as to cause any concern that the ships cable and levers may be over stressed."

I did the adjustment to mine and if I remember correctly its a 3/4" nut and 1/2 a turn clockwise made a big difference in my reverse. It doesn't take much.

I often have a whine on my boat too but when I leave the Mrs home it seems to stop. Have you attempted this diagnostic?
