I developed a leak from the cooling jacket plate. I scrubbed some rust off of there this spring and tightened the top flywheel side nut a bit too much. It stripped but I thought I was able to get it tight enough. A squealing alternator belt made me open the engine cover and I was greeted by a shower of seawater. That explained the squealing AND the full bilge I kept getting.

I ordered Don’s repair kit and the stud replacement. If one is going others are sure to follow, right? But on pulling the cooling jacket cover plate there was a sesame seed size hole in it and I could see other areas that were very thin. But Don included JB Weld with the repair kit, so I mixed up a batch of that, repaired the hole, installed the repair studs with the backing plate and the new studs. This off season I will order and install a new cover plate from Moyer.

Even if I didn't own an A4 anymore, I would hang out here just for the collective wisdom and the fraternity.

This off season I will order and install a new cover plate from Moyer.

While you're at it, don't forget the Tee-Fitting and Diverter Cap too.

Wouldn't it be great if someone made a plexiglass cover plate and film the water mixing around the cylinder walls. That way we would have proof that the diverter fitting really makes a difference, or not.

I have always thought that the water chamber that surrounds the cylinder walls just fills up completely, then exits to the head cooling channels, and out the thermostat housing. It that is correct, the diverter would not make a difference.

Jim, the back of the engine will always run a bit warmer as the water is injected at the bottom in the middle of the block however the water all exits out of the back end causing a bit of resistance for the water in the front to flow. If you see an engine run without and with the front end is where most of the wear is due to cooling flow. The diverter helps to get the water moving in the front to keep the water moving and at an even temp. The A-4 compensates for this inequality of cooling by having the engine's manifold on a slant so the front end gets a bit more fuel and the bit richer mix adds to the cooling.

The diverter does not make the engine run cooler it helps to keep the temps closer to even from end to end. A must for longevity!

So true.
Old Ford 300-six comes to mind; often we had to bore them .030" over just from number 1 cylinder wear in cold weather.
