    Farewell, it's been great!

    Dear friends,

After 4 years of great fun and learning the innards of the A-4 (as far as valve spring replacement in boat with head on working upside down), it is time for me to move on.

I originally bought the Catalina 27 to learn how to sail, and ended up earning a PhD in engine marine mechanics!

I just purchased a 1999 Catalina 36 mkII with Universal diesel.

It's a wonderful boat (huge!) and the engine is in very good shape, with only 400 hours on it. Original engine paint is still shiny.

The next owner of my C-27 will be advised to come here and learn his lessons.

Q: Is there a similar help group for the Universal diesel?

Farewell and adieu to ye, fair Afourian,
Farewell and adieu to ye Afourian of yore
For you've received a new engine for your brand-new sailboat
And perhaps we shall never more see you no more.

    Godspeed and fair winds!

Rick joined the forum October 16, 2007. Along the way, he contributed 246 posts.

Many thanks, Cap'n. Don also owned a C36, and he loved it dearly. I wish you the same.

      Take care,

Rick, fair winds and enjoy the new boat. If the diesel goes out you could slide in a A-4 very easily.
There is a group that a friend of mine checked out, although he said it wasn't real active like this one.

Back around 2000 my wife and I were in SanDiego and just for fun checked out a new Cat 36. Sweet!

              Rick-
There are two 36 mkII's in our marina. I covet them every time I see them!
Beautiful vessel. Congrats and enjoy her!
We should also thank you for letting us know you're moving on instead of just dropping out.

It's nice to "graduate" another A4 student from Don's wonderful school...

So long Rick. You've contributed a lot here.

I think you will find that everything you learned by working on your old A4 will serve you well with your newer Universal diesel. I did some minor work on a friends M25 or 35 (Atomic) diesel and was surprised to see an Oberdorfer raw water pump attached to it. Of course that sucker had a second pump for the closed cooling water circuit with a HX.

You will learn new skills: how to bleed your fuel line after replacing your filters, cleaning injectors, using glow plugs if you've got 'em. You are off to a good start.

                Congrats on the new boat.

Best wishes Rick, hope to see you on the Bay one day.

My dock neighbor has a Cat 36 and we swap tools now and then. It's a sweet boat. He's done a ton of upgrades to her where one day I'll catch up to him. I went from a Cat 27 to a C&C 36 and for a tiny while she was "BIG" to me too. Soon you'll feel right at home driving the 36 with no problems.

                  Happy Sailing! ~/)~~

Rick...I spend some time over on the SBO forum (sailboatowners.com) - there are a mix of folks over there, like any forum...but it is a good source for Catalina info. I usually ignore the "general" area and only keep an eye on the Catalina section.

                          cheers and congrats!

Well, Rick et al, congrats on your new boat. I must confess that I sold my C&C 33 MKI a couple of months ago. I will have to be a boat charterer for a few years now as I have a newborn daughter - hence, prompting the sale of my beloved boat. As we all know, to keep the good 'ol boats beautiful we have to spend at least as much time on maintenance tasks as we do sailing (probably more!). My daughter doesn't appear to enjoy watching me tinker around with stuff very much and likes the attention to be all on her. So, even though I don't have the 'ol A4 anymore, I still think the PhD in A4 repair I earned by necessity should be put to use by helping other folks who are now in the position of having a complete lack of knowledge about this great engine (the position I was in!) by checking out and contributing to this forum every once in a while. I really did fall for that little engine and came to enjoy working on it. I, however, am one to love a learning experience and that A4 provided me with one. So, when you feel inclined, don't hesitate to come on over the this great forum and offer a helping hand to some A4 folks in need. Cheers!
