    Stuffing box question

I just repacked my stuffing box and also installed a new hose. (engine still out of the boat so it was an easy job) I am wondering how far I should push the stuffing box assembly onto the stern tube. In other words, should there be a gap inside the hose between the bronze body of the box and the stern tube or should they touch, or does it matter? I forgot to make a note of how it was before I removed the old one.

I would think you would not want the stuffing box to touch the stern tube. If they rubbed together, one or the other might wear.

Take a look at the inside of the packing box hose you should see witness marks where it was positioned. Yes, there should be a gap between the shaft log and the packing box.

Cut the hose so the packing is on a clean unworn area of the shaft.

          stuffing box

All you really need is to get the hose on far enough to be able to get two hose clamps over the connection area. I think that I would keep the box separated from the stern tube if possible.

Thank you all. It all makes sense now.
