    Motorola blown diodes

Recently I noticed my ammeter gauge was indicating 0. When I got stopped
and took a look at things I saw the output wire had come apart at
a connector (hint -- do not use electical tape near a hot motor -- it
will get soft and lose its grip).

Presumable the diodes are kaput. Is this something I can fix myself
if I can get the right part or should I have a shop do it?

    Jonathan,

With your obvious mechanical ability, you should be able to install the diodes, but I'm not sure that it would be time well spent. My recollection is that the cost of such a replacement at a local alternator shop is around $50, with at least half of the bill being for parts. They'll also be able to check everything out before you leave.
